Three of Wands

The Three of Wands Quote

“Life has no other discipline to impose, if we would but realize it, than to accept life unquestioningly. Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate, or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy, and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such.“
Henry Miller (1891 - 1980)

Meaning upright

Having a vision, leaving the safe behind you, broadening your horizon, looking forward, venturing into a new adventure, having a vision, expecting better times, being prepared to leave everything behind, being an example to others, making plans for the near future, paying attention to your goals, going in the direction you have to go, taking responsibility, taking up the role of the leader, having confidence.

Meaning reversed

Delay, having no energy, to go things alone, results of bad advice, withdrawing from a project (that went well in the past), being insecure, feeling inferior, no idea what you want, not having a plan, lack of creativity, passivity, expecting loss, fear of loss, lack of possibilities, a need to change direction.

Gilded Tarot - Three of Wands

The Three of Wands in your reading

Here we see a figure standing on the shore, looking at a ship. When I pull this card I always have a feeling as if he sent it off a long time ago to discover new worlds. This man has the means for it (look at his clothes). After a long journey it comes back into the harbour. Will it be loaded with spices or other riches? What will the future hold for this man? He’s looking at it with high expectations.

In your daily life it is sometimes hard to look forward. When you do not have a vision where you want to go then you cannot go into that direction. It will keep you in the same place and the same mud around your feet. So why don’t you try to “step into your helicopter” and look at your situations from a distance to see what is going on and what you can do to change it. Look at it as if it is a film. That way you can release yourself from the daily rat race that we’re all in and decide what you need.

This Three of Wands asks you not to react to every little stimulus. Sometimes it is better to be pro-active than reactive. The first keeps you out of that rat race. This is a time in which you can see where you’re going when you keep doing what you’re doing. See the bigger picture and turn you ship into the direction you want to be. If you don’t, you will keep sailing in circles.

A good leader knows where he wants to go and takes the needed steps to get there. You cannot afford to let yourself go off into this situation. If you pull this card it is time to become your own personal leader and take action towards your goals. Help others to come along with you through this slow development. Be an example so you can inspire them. You have to be prepared to walk in front of them to show them the way. If you do not want to be the leader ask yourself why you are not prepared to be like the fool and step into this new adventure. The only difference between this card and the Fool is that now you will get the chance to prepare.
